What to expect from a visit to the chiropractor?

When you visit chiropractor for the first time you will be examined in much the same way that medical doctors do. You will normally be asked for a general medical history and also asked to answer questions about the type and location of pain that you are having. A hands-on examination will test your reflexes and muscle strength. Chiropractor may also take your temperature and your pulse. Range of motion and vertebral subluxations is of particular interest to chiropractors, so expect a test your spine and joints.

Your chiropractor may also order x-rays or use other techniques to complete or confirm a diagnosis. Be sure to ask questions about any procedures you are not familiar with.

For the final treatment phase chiropractors will use their hands to adjust the joints of the spine and extremities where signs of restriction in movement are found, improving mobility and relieving pain. By manipulating joints, chiropractors stimulate the joint movement receptors – your body’s position sensors that provide feedback to the brain on where the joint is in space. Some chiropractors also use electrical therapies as part of their treatment.
